Gen X Retro Flashback- "Mr. Roboto" -Styx

This is for my sister Erin. Whenever I hear this song, I wish we could wind back the clock to 1983, lace up some roller skates and make absolute fools of ourselves.

Oh, and of course, grab a few Jolly Ranchers or an Atomic Fire Ball or two to snack on...

  1. I still have no idea what this song was about. Love it anyway. That was a great thing about the 80's. You didn't have to think a lot. When a guy could wear a perm and have a porn 'stache and not have to worry about what people would think. Those were the best of times.

Also coincidentally, I was reading yesterday that Styx and Kenny Rogers were headlining Riverfest this weekend. Had I known it before yesterday, I probably would have tried to go. I mean, can you imagine, The Gambler AND Mister Roboto? Oh, for the days when I had too much time on my hands.

    OK, I'll stop now.

  2. "...and so, Erin, if you're listening, here's our long distance request and dedication, from your former roller skating partner in Florida, Jill. It's Styx, and Mister Roboto, on Casey's top forty..."

  3. I actually had the chance to see Styx at Sea World earlier this year, but I had a conflict and ended up not going!! I made up for it by seeing a 'Beach Boys' concert (which was more like a tribute band, seeing as how there were only two actual Beach Boys there!) And I saw Hall and Oates, who were very good actually. I don't know...Dennis DeYoung ('Is this the train to Desert Moon was all she said...') I can never decide if his contributions were good or bad to the band. Sometimes I love them, and then I hear 'Lady' for the 5,000th time and I want to stab myself in the eye with a fork!

Mister Roboto is a bit different in that whenever I hear it, I think of my sister. It's like 'our song'. So many memories come flooding back. I don't know what it's about either really, although it is my understanding that it was part of a Tommyesque rock opera they did. I think it might be about how technology is a corrupting force...

Whenever I think of Kenny Rogers, I think of the Seinfeld ep where Kramer and Jerry switch apartments because of the sign for the Kenny Rogers Roasters! And coincidentally, he had a song called 'Lady' but I like that one!!
