Gen X Retro Flashback- 'Major Tom' - Peter Shilling

Kids, I have to be honest and say that while I have always really liked this track, until today, I'd never seen the video! And it's a video that could ONLY have been shot in the 80's. This song, originally recorded in German, (like Nena's 99 Luftballons) is meant to be a re-telling of David Bowie's 'Space Odyssey' ("Ground Control to Major Tom..."), but for some reason, Peter Shilling spends most of his time in the video sitting in an abandoned car on a pile of other...you guessed it, abandoned cars with... even more incomprehensible...a group of derelict winos. Then for some reason, out of of nowhere appear, a whole gaggle of 60's era carhops skating around...well...space.  Perhaps, I simply am not 'getting' the symbolism!

Apparently, Peter Shilling still has quite a robust career in Germany an an 'electro-pop' artist.
Here from 1983, is, 'Major Tom'

  1. Wow, what'd you have, like a mix tape labeled "Launch Songz?"

Did you go to Space Camp? I had to find my blog entry about visiting the Space & Rocket Center. (Do you even read these links I leave? Actually, don't answer that. I'm just going to pretend you do.)

  2. You know, I almost added a sentence to my blog post saying that the choice of 'Major Tom' wasn't part of a 'theme', and you were the reason I almost addded it!! I just knew you were going to bring that up! Truthfully, the songs or commercials I pick for the 'flashback' are just whatever happens to strike me at the time. I never really thought of 'Major Tom' being about space, although I guess, the 'ground control line' sort of gives it away!!

No, I never attended Space Camp. It was a bit expensive. I do very much remember though, wishing I could go on Double Dare (had a smallish crush on the host Marc Whatshisname) and win a trip to Space Camp.

I always read your comments and try to respond, and of course I look at the links! Pretend no more! I even tried twice to email you because these comments were sooo long, but both times the emails came back, once to the AOL and once to GMAIL. I had actually read that post 'BBQ and Rockets' before some months ago. I remember being intrigued by 'Alabama White BBQ Sauce'. Although once I 'googled' it and discovered the base was mayonnaise, I have to admit the intrigue abruptly ended. There are few things I loathe with the intensity I do mayonnaise. I hope this won't affect the blogationship!

  3. No, it doesn't affect the blogationship at all. Although I'm not sure I can say the same for you forgetting Marc Summers last name.

I'm pretty sure my sister and I would make up our own Double Dare obstacle course at home. And she'd always end up getting hurt, and I'd get in trouble. Whatever. Things like that never happened on Nickelodeon!
